As a child, Andreas Theobald initially played the accordion before later switching to the piano. As a teenager, he studied for many years with Bonn-based jazz pianist Marcus Schinkel, later continuing his studies with Martin Sasse. From 2014 to 2016, he was a member of the Bonn Youth Jazz Orchestra. Following first place in the Jugend Jazzt competition, he was accepted into the North Rhine-Westphalia Youth Jazz Orchestra, where he remained a member until 2019.

In 2016, he initially began studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Piano. At the Cologne University of Music and Dance, he studied with Prof. Hendrik Soll, Florian Ross, and Hubert Nuss, and graduated with top marks in 2022 as a scholarship holder of the Cusanuswerk. As his graduation project, he released his debut album Movimiento under his own name. In 2021, he won first prize in the international choral composition competition Musica Sacra Nova with his setting of the Gloria. In 2023, he collaborated as a composer and accordionist with the MDR Radio Choir as part of the Leipzig Jazz Days. The resulting project, Kind of… Choral Music, was awarded the German Jazz Prize in 2024. Since 2023, he has been studying for a Master’s degree in Composition in Cologne; since 2025, he has also studied with Ēriks Ešenvalds and Krists Auznieks at the Latvian Academy of Music in Riga, where he sings in the Riga Chamber Choir Ave Sol.

He works as a pianist, accordionist, (Hammond) organist, singer, arranger, and composer for a variety of ensembles, operating at the intersection of jazz, pop, and contemporary classical music. Most recently, in June 2025, he won third prize in the prestigious composition competition of the Pēteris Vasks Foundation in Riga, Latvia.
